Oil miller

Watch the oil miller

In his horse-driven mill the miller presses oil from linseed. A “virtual horse” demonstrates how the horse once drove this mill.

In 1840 a farmer by the name of ‘Teunis’ Krabbenborg installed an oil mill in the barn on his farm; this mill was driven by horse power. Before long farmers from the surrounding area started to bring their oil-bearing seeds, such as rapeseed and linseed, here to have the oil pressed out. This provided oil for lighting, roasting and frying, and paint, as well as a by-product: rapeseed cakes, which were used as a highly nutritious cattle feed during the winter months.
