Childbirth and the post-natal period
In the past people used to dry wet nappies rather than wash them. A nappy warmer or drier was used for this task. Without first rinsing out the nappy, you simply placed it on this rounded object, made from earthenware or iron. Glowing coals were placed underneath and the heat would then dry the nappy.
A nappy drier is one of the many objects at the Open Air Museum associated with the theme of childbirth and the post-natal period. Other examples include a pushchair, a breastfeeding bra, a wedding ring and a breast pump for the mother. A selection of these objects can be seen under this theme.
